Keep kids safe from injury in the pool this summer

Summertime is fun time for the kids. As the months grow hot, you're inevitably going to look to the pool for a way to relax, cool off and expend some energy. Living in New Jersey, you'll have no small access to aquatic fun, but whether you have your own pool or are just visiting, you need to take care to protect your kids. Water sports are fun, but they are also one of the most dangerous activities for young children. Understanding the most common problems and how to prevent them can help you and your family enjoy a better, safer summer season.

What does nursing home "standard of care" mean?

Making the decision to go into a nursing home or to encourage a parent or grandparent to live in a nursing home or assisted living facility isn't always an easy one. When it is made, there is an assumption that the resident will be able to receive a level of care that they and their family are not able to consistently provide on their own. The state of New Jersey has strict requirements on who can be licensed to operate a nursing home, who is allowed to work in these facilities and the types of services that seniors or disabled individuals should receive when they are living there. Several public and private agencies are responsible for helping the facilities maintain their operations by issuing licenses, imposing regulations, inspecting periodically and responding to complaints. These include:

Negligent medical practices can cause birth injuries

Every parent wants the experience of a new baby to be as exciting and enjoyable as possible. While uncomfortable moments come with the territory, when all is said and done most expect to go home with a healthy baby. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Even when it appears that the pregnancy was normal, there are things that can go wrong during labor and delivery, and it is the job of doctors, nurses and other hospital staff to stay alert and respond appropriately to prevent injuries and limit any harmful effects if possible. When they are unable to do this, it is important that parents look closely at the situation to determine whether negligent medical practices may have played a role in their child's injury.

The importance of recognizing signs of nursing home abuse

Placing a loved one in a nursing home facility can be a difficult decision for any family to make. However, when an aging relative can no longer safely care for him or herself, it is necessary. Family members often take solace in the knowledge that their loved one is being well cared for by trained professionals. Unfortunately, this is not always what happens. There are times when safety and care regulations are not met by a facility or by some employees of a facility and as a result, the occupants suffer mistreatment, neglect or abuse.

Keeping kids safe from dangerous toys this holiday season

No matter what holiday you celebrate, the season is a time for family, friends and general merriment. For those with children, gift giving is often a part of the celebration. What we as parents and grandparents need to think about is how safe are the toys we are giving our children?
