Patient sues after foreign object left inside him by dentist

Going to the dentist is something that many New Jersey residents do twice a year. Most individuals make their semi-annual preventative maintenance appearances in hopes of avoiding problems later. The visits, for most patients, are typically painless and result in pearly white smiles. Many have learned that if they do not take care of themselves now, they may have serious tooth or gum problems later that require dental surgery. Throughout this process, it is generally assumed that there will not be a foreign object left inside the dental patient that should not be there.

Recently, a man was awarded a $675,000 settlement from a suit against his dentist. The man went in to have a standard root canal performed. While performing the procedure, the dentist realized that a tool was missing. Even after searching the dental office, the tool was not found.

The root canal was completed, and the patient was sent home. Several days later, he began experiencing stomach problems and sought medical attention. An X-ray pointed to the source of his problem – the missing dental tool. Apparently, the man had unknowingly swallowed the tool during the dental procedure.

There are checks and balances in place to make sure that there will not be a foreign object left whenever dental or other medical procedures are conducted. This prevents patients from suffering as the result of something accidentally being misplaced, dropped or forgotten. If a New Jersey resident does find him or herself suffering as the result of a situation such as this, he or she may want to review the legal options available to help remedy the situation.
