Lives may be shortened after failure to recognize cancer

Suffering from cancer is an unfortunate reality for many individuals in New Jersey and around the world. When it comes to treating various forms of cancer, timing can play a significant role in how effective treatments are. Therefore, when a medical professional does not properly assess a patient, the failure to recognize cancer could drastically reduce an individual's chances of survival.

One man in another state filed a medical malpractice claim against his local VA after a nurse practitioner did not order enough tests to recognize his cancer. Reports stated that the man had apparently undergone an exam, and the nurse practitioner noticed abnormalities on the man's prostate. However, further testing was not ordered in attempts to determine what the abnormalities could mean for the man's health.

Nearly a year after that exam, the man was informed that he had prostate cancer. The cancer was already at stage four when he obtained the diagnosis, and as a result, he was not given much time to live. The court recently awarded him $2.5 million in relation to his malpractice case, and the man hopes the lawsuit will draw attention to the need for better veteran care.

The failure to recognize cancer could easily result in a patient having a bleak outlook after a delayed diagnosis. If New Jersey residents have faced similar circumstances as the man in this case, they may also have cause to seek justice. Information on medical malpractice claims could help them assess this legal option and determine whether moving forward with a claim could be in their best interests.
