Death can occur from risky surgical techniques

Most medical procedures come with risks. However, when doctors utilize the best methods for the particular patient and situation, operations are often successful. Unfortunately, medical professionals do not always take the best approach when carrying out necessary procedures, and in tragic cases, death can result from negligent actions.

New Jersey readers may be interested in an out-of-state medical malpractice case that revolved around such an issue. Reports stated that in 2013, a woman had undergone a surgical procedure in order to address a hernia. During the operation, the doctor apparently performed a "risky and dangerous" procedure to close the opening in the diaphragm that had occurred. The technique apparently involved using tacks to close the opening, even though the tacks could move and reach the heart.

Days after the operation, the woman went into cardiac arrest and died. The woman's family believed that the death was caused by the tacks reaching her heart. As a result, the family filed a lawsuit against the doctor and nurse involved in the procedure. Legal representation for the doctor stated that the technique used in the surgery was safe and did not cause the woman's death. Nonetheless, the court ruled in favor of the woman's family, and they were awarded $6.8 million.

The death of a loved one is rarely easy to cope with, and when such a tragedy occurs due to medical negligence, it can be even more harrowing to face. If New Jersey families have been in similar situations where they lost loved ones due to medical malpractice, they may wish to consider their legal options. Speaking with knowledgeable attorneys may help them better understand their most viable courses of action for seeking compensation.
