Legal action may be warranted if malpractice leads to death

Having a child can be one of the most rewarding moments in a person's life. When something goes wrong during pregnancy or delivery, that joyous moment can turn into a nightmare. With advances in technology, many children born prematurely can receive care that helps them thrive and go on to live healthy lives. Unfortunately, if doctors do not do their parts, a preventable death could occur.

New Jersey readers may be interested in two families who have recently filed suit against a hospital in another state. Reports indicated that both families had a child born prematurely. One mother indicated that she believed her daughter had a good chance of surviving, but unfortunately, that child and the baby boy of the other family died before they reached a month of life.

Both families believe that the staff members at the hospital did not treat their children with an appropriate level of care. They also claim that negligence led to the deaths of the children. It was unclear what actions or types of inaction caused the families to feel this way. Nonetheless, they have filed legal claims against the hospital, which issued a statement expressing sympathies to the families.

Any death in the family can be difficult to bear, and when a young child barely gets a chance at life, parents and other loved ones can be understandably devastated. In the event that medical malpractice contributes to such outcomes, New Jersey residents may have reason to follow this example and file legal claims of their own. Information from knowledgeable attorneys could help interested individuals in such predicaments understand their options.
